4 Reasons Dermal Filler May Fade Faster Than You Expected

Most facial fillers last somewhere between 6-18 months. If your injector gave you an estimate, but your results seem to be fading faster than you expected, here are some reasons this may be happening.

1. You received a filler with a shorter duration

Each filler formula has a slightly different molecular structure that affects how long it lasts when injected—usually anywhere from 6 to 18 months or longer. For example, Juvéderm Volbella usually lasts about 12 months, while Juvéderm Vollure can last up to 18 months. If you received a longer-lasting filler in the past, but your injector used a filler with a shorter duration for your touch-up, then it’s normal to see results fade faster than expected.

2. You’re a first-time dermal filler patient, or it’s the injector’s first time treating you

For newcomers to dermal fillers, skilled injectors will often make conservative recommendations and be cautious in their approach. This strategy allows them to observe how your body reacts to the filler, as well as to get a sense of your feelings about the changes you see, without over-correcting the first time.

Further, many patients wish to enhance their features without appearing overdone, so injectors may use less product to be sure they are providing a refined, natural improvement in volume and contour, as well as preserving the natural dynamics of your facial expressions.

Similar to first-time patients, if an injector is working with you for the first time, they may prefer to start conservatively. This cautious approach helps them understand how the filler will integrate with your unique facial anatomy and how your body metabolizes the product.

At our med spa we often schedule a two-week check-in after Botox® or filler treatments, especially for patients newer to our practice or these treatments. You may not feel the need for a touch-up, but we are ready to provide one if you find you need it!

3. You filled an area that moves when you smile, talk, and laugh

Areas of the face that experience more movement, such as the lips and around the mouth, tend to dissolve filler faster. This is because the constant muscle activity in these areas can metabolize the filler material more quickly than in less active areas. So if you got lip filler, for example, your filler’s visible effects may have a shorter duration. Still, expect your injector to give you realistic expectations for how long your filler will last in a given area.

4. You have a fast metabolism

Every person’s metabolism gradually dissolves the filler after injections, and while it has not been proven by any research studies, most injectors agree that patients who exercise frequently (like runners) and those with a fast metabolism seem to see their filler results fade slightly faster than those who are less active. Every person reacts in a unique way to each treatment, so if you find that your filler is fading faster than you hoped, ask your injector if they can recommend a longer-lasting filler formula for your next session.

Our advice? Schedule a follow-up at Maningas Wellness + Injectables in 2 weeks!

Given the nuanced nature of filler integration and metabolism, scheduling a follow-up med spa appointment about 2 weeks after your initial treatment can be very beneficial. This visit allows your injector to assess the filler’s settling process and make any necessary adjustments. Follow-up evaluations are a standard part of making sure your results meet your expectations, and that we are available to help perfect and extend the longevity of your desired look.
