What is Botox?

Also Known As a Neurotoxin or Botulinum Toxin

Botox injections in Joplin, MO can temporarily soften moderate to severe forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults. The goal is a rested look that still looks like you. Botox is a prescription medicine injected into the muscles that create those lines.

At Maningas Cosmetic Surgery, we offer five neurotoxins, often called tox, because no single product fits every face. They are Botox®, Dysport®, Daxxify®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®. Our nurse injector, Katlyn Brooks, RN, works under the direction of triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Talon Maningas, a Joplin native. She is passionate about helping patients get personalized, natural-looking results. She listens to your concerns and recommends a customized plan.

Is Botox right for me?

You may be a good candidate if you:

• are 18 or older and in generally good health
• notice lines in your forehead, between your brows, or around your eyes that you’d like to soften
• want natural-looking results

Botox can also ease a tired or stern expression that doesn’t match how you feel. Before treatment, tell Katlyn about your health history, including any neuromuscular condition and whether you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. The Botox Cosmetic label notes added considerations for each.

What can Botox do for me and my skin?

Botox is FDA-approved for these areas in adults, among others:

• frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines, also called “elevens”)
• crow’s feet around the eyes
• forehead lines

Your injector may also treat lines at the corners of the mouth or a “cobblestone” look in the chin. Those uses are off-label, meaning the FDA has not specifically approved Botox for them. Botox is also FDA-approved for chronic migraine prevention in adults and severe underarm sweating when topical treatments don’t work well. We also offer other off-label uses, including bunny lines, platysmal bands in the neck, the Nefertiti lift, DOAs (the muscles that pull the corners of the mouth down), hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), gummy smile, and lip flip.

Will Botox get rid of wrinkles?

Botox works on lines caused by muscle movement. It temporarily relaxes the muscles that fold your skin, so frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet look softer. Results vary per person.

Types of Neurotoxins: The Difference Between Botox, Dysport, Daxxify, Xeomin and Jeuveau

All five are FDA-approved neurotoxins that temporarily smooth lines caused by muscle movement. Each has its own formulation, so you and Katlyn choose based on your anatomy and goals.

Botox® (onabotulinumtoxinA)

Botox Cosmetic is FDA-approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, forehead lines, and platysma bands (vertical neck bands) in adults. Botox costs $13 per unit at Maningas Cosmetic Surgery. Botox starts working within a few days, building over the first week, and lasts about three to four months. Our team often uses Botox for small areas such as crow’s feet and frown lines, and, as an off-label use, to create a subtle eyebrow arch.

Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA)

Dysport is FDA-approved for frown lines in adults under 65. Dysport units aren’t interchangeable with Botox units, so unit counts differ by brand. Dysport also costs $13 per unit, but it usually takes more units than Botox, so compare your total rather than the price per unit. Results begin to appear in about two to four days and last about four months. Dysport is often chosen for larger areas, such as horizontal forehead lines, which is an off-label use.

Daxxify® (daxibotulinumtoxinA-lanm)

Daxxify is FDA-approved for frown lines in adults. Results begin to appear in about one to two days and last about six months. Because results last longer, you may need fewer visits each year. Daxxify units are measured differently than Botox units, so you will likely need more units than with Botox. Some patients see results last up to nine months. Some injectors also try Daxxify when Botox seems to be working less well. Daxxify costs $13 per unit at Maningas Cosmetic Surgery.

Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA)

Xeomin is FDA-approved for frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines in adults. Results begin to appear within about two to seven days and last about three to four months. Xeomin units aren’t interchangeable with Botox units, so your injector will adjust the amount for you. We often recommend Xeomin for patients who may have developed resistance to Botox. Xeomin costs $13 per unit at Maningas Cosmetic Surgery.

Jeuveau® (prabotulinumtoxinA-xvfs)

Jeuveau is FDA-approved for frown lines in adults. Jeuveau results are similar to Botox, with early improvement within a couple of days, full results by about a month, and effects lasting up to about four months. Jeuveau units aren’t interchangeable with Botox units, and because it is approved for frown lines only, treating other areas would be technically off-label. Jeuveau may be a good fit for you if frown lines are your main concern. Jeuveau costs $13 per unit at Maningas Cosmetic Surgery.
