Can Hydrafacial treat acne? A new study says yes!

Woman looks at glowing, healthy skin in mirror after a series of Hydrafacial treatments for acne

We’ve known for years that Hydrafacials feel amazing and make your skin radiant—but a new study changes the game! Hydrafacials are now proven, research-backed treatments for acne. If you’re struggling with breakouts, our expert aesthetic team has the facts to help you decide if it’s time to invest in regular Hydrafacials at our med spa.

What is a Hydrafacial?

Hydrafacials are multi-step facials that use a patented water vortex to cleanse and hydrate the skin, as well as extract impurities from pores. Hydrafacials can also be customized to treat specific concerns like acne, aging, or rosacea.

During a Hydrafacial, your aesthetician passes a handpiece over your skin, which supplies a continuous jet of water while also “vacuuming” away impurities. It additionally infuses the skin with nourishing, healing ingredients. You’ll be instantly photo-ready, as Hydrafacial requires no downtime or waiting for results.

Study looks at effects of Hydrafacial for acne

A new peer-reviewed clinical study published in the Journal of Clinical and Aesthetic Dermatology (JCAD) looked at the effects of Hydrafacials in individuals with mild-to-moderate acne. Researchers included 20 participants in the study, ranging in age from 19 to 48 with a range of Fitzpatrick skin types (i.e. light, medium, and dark skin tones).

Study participants received a clarifying Hydrafacial treatment combined with blue LED light from a Hydrafacial specialist and licensed esthetician every two weeks during a 12-week period (6 skincare treatments total).

The researchers found a 100% positive response: there was a significant improvement in acne severity for 100% of participants—they had clearer, healthier, and more radiant skin. They reported a reduction in the number of acne lesions, less inflammation, and skin that looked and felt cleaner. This proves that Hydrafacial’s patented Vortex-Fusion Delivery System, combined with special clarifying serums and the blue LED light we include for acne-prone skin, is an ideal treatment to clear up breakouts.

Plus, they reported a serious boost of confidence in their appearance: 40% said they felt more confident after their first treatment, but a whopping 100% felt more confident after their final treatment.

This is not only exciting for treating acne itself, but means that, if you’re acne prone, getting regular Hydrafacials will also help to prevent the acne scarring that comes after breakouts worsen. (Acne scar removal is more difficult than treating acne, but we offer laser treatments, Morpheus8 microneedling, and other facials that can help.)

Hydrafacial vs. other facials for acne

Compared with acne facials and options like microdermabrasion, dermabrasion, chemical peels, and laser therapy, Hydrafacial has some benefits you may not be aware of:

  • Safe for dark skin tones
  • Zero downtime required, without irritation or redness after treatment
  • Comfortable, non-invasive treatments—no pain or itching like you have with peels and lasers!
  • Gentle enough for sensitive, reactive skin
  • Provides pore cleansing and sebum reduction, with zero manual exfoliation and without drying out the skin

Among the available medical aesthetic treatments for skin, patients typically find that Hydrafacial is the most gentle and comfortable.

Why is Hydrafacial good for acne?

The clarifying Hydrafacial uses glycolic acid, a gentle exfoliating ingredient, with the water vortex to promote exfoliation in a gentle way that doesn’t irritate the skin. For oil control, it’s important to avoid irritating or over-drying the skin, which can lead to increased oil production and ultimately worsen acne breakouts and lesions.

Further, it is superior to manual facial extraction for blackhead removal and whitehead removal: Hydrafacial clears pores with a water vortex and purifying ingredients that are unlikely to irritate the skin.

Hydrafacials can treat acne on the chest and back, too!

Acne breakouts aren’t just common on the face—body acne on areas like the chest and back are equally frustrating, and treatment can be difficult. Luckily, Hydrafacials are equally effective at treating face and body, and we offer Hydrafacials for both at our wellness spa.

What results can a Hydrafacial achieve?

Here are the proven Hydrafacial benefits for acne:

  • Clearer skin
  • Fewer acne lesions
  • Reduced inflammation

Additionally, Hydrafacial offers benefits for other concerns:

  • Better skin hydration
  • Dewy, radiant complexion
  • Smaller, cleaner pores
  • Diminished appearance of dark spots and sun spots
  • Reduced redness
  • Fewer fine lines and wrinkles

Plan for a series of facials to treat blemishes

While booking a Hydrafacial is always a good idea, scheduling a series of treatments every 2-4 weeks will help you see much more noteworthy results. For patients targeting acne, we recommend planning a series of 6 treatments every 2 weeks to start with, then returning for maintenance treatments at intervals as needed after that.
