10 Upper Blepharoplasty FAQs: Upper Eyelid Surgery Questions, Answered

If you’ve been researching upper blepharoplasty, you’ve probably seen the basics: it’s a surgical procedure to remove excess skin from the upper eyelids to restore a more alert, youthful appearance. But what about the more specific questions—the ones you don’t always see in top search results?

At Maningas Cosmetic Surgery in Joplin, we welcome questions of all kinds, because the more you understand your options, the more confident you can feel about your decision. Below, triple board-certified cosmetic surgeon Dr. Talon Maningas answers 10 lesser-asked (but equally important!) questions about upper eyelid surgery that might just apply to your unique situation.

1. Can upper blepharoplasty fix uneven eyelids?

Yes—asymmetry is one of the most common concerns we see, and upper blepharoplasty can help correct it. Dr. Maningas takes careful measurements of each eyelid and tailors the amount of skin and fat removed to restore balance and harmony between both eyes.

2. What’s the difference between hooded eyelids and upper eyelid ptosis?

Though they may look similar, these are two different concerns. Hooded eyelids are caused by excess skin draping over the crease, while ptosis is when the eyelid itself droops lower than normal due to weakened muscles. Blepharoplasty addresses skin excess, while ptosis repair tightens the muscle. In most cases, both can be addressed in the same procedure.

3. Will eyelid surgery change the shape of my eyes?

Not if done correctly. Dr. Maningas’s approach to blepharoplasty is to enhance the natural eyelid contour without altering the eye’s fundamental shape. The goal is to refresh—not reinvent—your appearance.

4. Is upper blepharoplasty different for men vs. women?

Yes. Eyelid surgery for men typically preserves a lower, flatter crease to maintain a masculine appearance. Women often want a more defined upper lid. Dr. Maningas adjusts his technique based on each patient’s anatomy and aesthetic preferences.

5. Can upper blepharoplasty help relieve forehead tension?

It can. When heavy upper eyelids cause you to lift your brows to see clearly, it puts a constant strain on the forehead muscles. After blepharoplasty, many patients report fewer headaches and less brow fatigue, especially by the end of the day.

6. What happens if I have dry eyes?

Mild dry eye is common and typically not a barrier to eyelid surgery. Oftentimes, eyelid surgery can reduce dry eye symptoms by improving eyelid closure and reducing the weight of the eyelid, which can help with tear film coverage and distribution across the eye. That said, surgical techniques or complications can affect tear production and worsen dryness.

Dr. Maningas will discuss your symptoms and assess your eyelid function during your consultation. If you already struggle with dryness, he may adjust his surgical technique or recommend using lubricating eye drops after surgery to help with healing.

7. How long does eyelid tightness last after surgery?

A feeling of tightness or pulling is normal during the first 1 to 3 weeks as the tissues heal. Most patients find this sensation improves gradually. If tightness persists or interferes with blinking, it’s best to follow up with your surgeon to ensure everything is healing properly post-procedure.

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure—especially for the face—your results rely on the experience and skill of your surgeon and carefully following all aftercare instructions.

8. Can upper blepharoplasty be combined with laser or filler?

Yes. Many patients choose to combine their eyelid lift with laser resurfacing around the eyes to smooth fine lines or dermal filler in the under-eye or cheeks for more comprehensive rejuvenation. These treatments can be performed in the same session or staged based on your goals.

9. When will I be able to wear eye makeup after an upper bleph?

You’ll need to wait about 10 to 14 days before applying eye makeup to allow the incision to fully close and the skin to heal. After that, many patients love how easily shadow and liner apply to their newly visible lid space.

10. Can upper blepharoplasty improve my peripheral vision?

Yes—when excess skin obstructs the upper or outer visual fields, removing it can dramatically improve your ability to see clearly. In some cases, this functional benefit may even qualify you for insurance coverage, depending on your exam findings and visual field test results.
