One of the most popular and frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedures is breast augmentation. It has a long and successful track record for patients who wish to enhance, regain or restore balance to their figure. Breast augmentation surgery increases or restores breast size and shape using silicone gel implants, saline implants, or in rare cases, fat transfer.
If any of the following describe you, a breast augmentation is an option to consider:
There’s never been a better time to have breast augmentation, as today you have more choices than ever to help you customize your new look. Whether you’d like more dramatic curves or a modest boost in cleavage, there’s an option for you. Here are some choices you can expect Dr. Maningas to go over during your consultation at Maningas Cosmetic Surgery in Joplin, MO.
There is not one implant type that is “best,” but there are some differences in cost, feel, and incision requirements that you need to consider. Saline implants are FDA approved for women 18 years of age or older and silicone implants are FDA approved for women 22 years of age or older.
Your profile shape will be based on your existing proportions and your goals. Generally, patients with a more petite frame will require a higher profile implant to achieve the desired size increase while ensuring the implants are not too wide at the base. Dr. Maningas will select the best profile to meet your desired goals based on the size you select during your fitting process.
Breast implants range in size from about 150cc to 800cc or larger. Some patients require a different sized breast implant for each breast; this helps to achieve the best possible symmetry.

Yes. You a post-op bra is included in your patient care bag and you will sent home in that bra following your surgery. It is imperative to wear a supportive, non-underwire sports bra for 6 weeks to ensure breast implants are supported properly while the muscles are healing. Too much activity and not enough support early on in the recovery process can negatively affect your results and may require additional surgery to repair.
A breast augmentation procedure is performed as an outpatient surgery with general anesthesia at our in-office and accredited surgical suite. The actual surgery typically takes no more than 45 minutes; however, patients can expect to be here 1 hour prior to their procedure time and 1 hour after. The incision is less than 1 inch long and is most commonly hidden in the breast crease. Other incision placement options can be discussed with Dr. Maningas during a consultation.
You can expect to walk around on your own a few hours after surgery, and most patients feel up to leaving the house within two or three days. You may feel sore the first week or so, and you will need to limit strenuous exercise for about 2-4 weeks. You can expect anywhere from 3-10 days of downtime and lifting restrictions for 1-6 weeks depending on implant placement. You will be asked to wear a supportive surgical bra or sports bra for a certain period of time after breast augmentation—it is crucial to follow your instructions to ensure you heal properly and for the best possible results.
If your breast implants are placed partially beneath the pectoral muscle—the preferred method in most cases—your breasts may seem to sit high on the chest at first and even up to 3 or 4 months based on your anatomy. This is normal, and your implants will settle into their optimal position over the next several months, with final results typically after 6+ months.
According to the manufacturer warranty, it is suggested to replace implants every 10 years. However, this is not necessary if you aren’t having any issues. It is also encouraged to have routine MRI scans (or ultrasound) every few years after having implants placed to monitor for any leaks and/or ruptures.
