    Breast Revision

What Is a Breast Revision or Correction?

There are several reasons a woman may want to have corrective breast or breast revision surgery. Some women have naturally-occurring breast irregularities or deformities. Others have had previous cosmetic breast surgery, but the results are less than optimal. And, occasionally, even the most well-executed breast enhancement surgery can develop problems over time, necessitating a revision procedure.

    WHAT DOES IT COST?

Cosmetic breast revision surgery starts at $6,500

    WHAT IS THE DOWNTIME?

Downtimes can range from 3-10 days, depending on what type of breast procedure is performed

    WILL I HAVE RESTRICTIONS?

No lifting, pushing, or pulling for the first 6 weeks

    WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Non-smokers, female, 18-65+ years old and generally in good health

    Types of Cosmetic Breast Concerns

    Uneven Breasts

While no pair of breasts are absolutely identical, sometimes there is a significant difference in the breasts’ size or shape. One might be an A-cup, and the other a C-cup. At Maningas Cosmetic Surgery, we have the ability to utilize different sizes of breast implants to help correct this type of concern. A breast lift may also be recommended for one or both breasts to correct asymmetry. Sometimes, breasts are uneven because one droops more than the other. To correct this condition, Dr. Maningas may recommend a breast lift on one side and a breast implant on the other, or perhaps implants on both sides.

    Tuberous Breasts

Tuberous, or conical-appearing, breasts are a deformity caused when the inferior pole (lower half) of the breast is severely constricted. Without enough breast tissue and skin on the underside of the breast, the breast appears pointed, or cone-shaped, rather than rounded. There are several surgical techniques that can be used to correct this condition.

    Post-Breast Implant Surgery Issues

Women may also experience problems from a previous breast augmentation, either soon after or later on:

    • If saline implants deflate, they must be replaced.
    • If excessive scar tissue develops around a breast implant – called capsular contracture – the scar tissue can be removed (though, in this case, there is a risk that new scar tissue may form).
    • Breast implants may also be poorly positioned – one or both appearing too high, too low or too far apart to provide desired cleavage. A skilled cosmetic surgeon can usually correct these problems.
    • Other patients may see and feel severe rippling or other issues that can usually result when implants are placed on top of the chest muscle. Re-placing the implants and transitioning them to under the muscle or replacing saline implants with silicone are two possible corrective techniques.

Some patients may need a breast lift after implant surgery. This can happen when time has passed and the breast is starting to sag, leaving them feeling and/or looking “heavy” or bottomed-out. In some cases, it could also be because a breast lift may have been a recommended procedure to achieve optimal results, but the patient opted to not move forward with the procedure, usually due to not want the breast lift scars.

Every woman’s body is unique and concerns vary. It takes both skill and talent to design the right surgical approach to individually-tailor corrective breast surgery and achieve the best result possible, so choose a cosmetic surgeon with proven experience and credentials. Breast Implant Revision: What to Expect

Breast implant revision surgery involves several procedures aimed at addressing issues with or updating previous breast augmentation results. The specific steps and techniques Dr. Maningas will use during your breast implant revision surgery can vary widely depending on your individual case.

    Your Consultation with Dr. Maningas

Before the surgery, you will have a consultation with Dr. Maningas to discuss your goals, revision options, and the specific approach that Dr. Maningas will take to help you achieve your goals. This might include deciding on new implant sizes, shapes, or types (saline or silicone), and discussing any additional procedures that may be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.

    Anesthesia

Breast revision surgery is performed under general anesthesia to support your comfort and safety throughout the entire procedure.

    Incision Placement

Dr. Maningas will make incisions to access the existing breast implants. These incisions are often made in the same location as those from the previous augmentation surgery to minimize additional scarring. Common incision sites include under the breast along the crease (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or under the arm (transaxillary).

    Removal and Replacement of Implants

Next, the existing implants are carefully removed, and any necessary adjustments to the breast pocket are made to accommodate the new implants. This might involve resizing the pocket, correcting capsular contracture, or addressing any asymmetry or displacement issues.

    Additional Procedures

In some cases, Dr. Maningas may perform additional procedures in conjunction with implant replacement to achieve the patient’s desired results. This could include a breast lift (mastopexy) to address sagging, correction of rippling or wrinkling, or adjustment of the nipple and areola position.

    Closing the Incisions

Once the new implants are in place and any additional procedures are completed, the incisions are closed with sutures. Drainage tubes may be placed at your incision sites to allow for removal of excess fluid. The breasts are bandaged or placed in a supportive garment to aid in healing.

    Recovery & Results

Recovery from breast implant revision surgery varies widely by the individual and the extent of the procedures performed. You can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort initially, and you will likely need to take time off work and avoid strenuous activities for several weeks. Dr. Maningas and his patient care coordinators will provide specific aftercare instructions to support healing and achieve the best possible results.

The initial results of your breast implant revision surgery are visible immediately after the procedure, but it takes time for swelling to subside and the implants to settle into their final position. You can expect to see your final results about 3 to 6 months post-surgery, as your breasts fully heal and the tissues adjust to your new implants.

WHEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY CURRENT BREAST IMPLANTS?

It is commonly suggested to replace implants every 10 years, as this is when the manufacturer warranty is up. However, it is not a hard and fast rule that you must get new breast implants every 10 years. We see many patients that have had their current implants for 15+ years and have no issues, but simply want a refreshed result.

WHAT DO I DO IF I THINK I HAVE A RUPTURED IMPLANT?

An MRI or ultrasound check is almost always suggested as a first step to confirm whether or not there an implant is ruptured or leaking. From there, Dr. Maningas can consult on goals and options for cosmetic breast revision surgery.

WHAT TYPE OF BRA SHOULD I WEAR AFTER SURGERY?

Some patients like the surgical bra they are sent home in and choose to wear that throughout the 6 weeks of recovery, while others prefer to get their own. If you choose to get your own sports bra, make sure it provides good support and doesn’t have any underwire. Front-zip sports bras are popular among patients, as they are easy to put on and get off when you are sore for the first few weeks after surgery!
