Collagen is a key structural component that keeps skin youthful looking and smooth. As you age, your body’s collagen production decreases, which is a major factor in the development of wrinkles. Dermal fillers are gel-like, volumizing substances that are injected beneath the skin to restore lost volume, smooth fine lines and deep creases, or enhance facial contours. Over the last few years, more than 1 million men and women annually have chosen this popular facial rejuvenation treatment, which can be a cost-effective way to look younger without surgery or downtime.
We use several types of facial fillers: Restylane, Juvéderm, Sculptra, and Radiesse. All are safe and proven to work. Radiesse Volumizing Filler acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. Restylane and Juvéderm are cosmetic facial fillers made of hyaluronic acid, a substance that exists naturally in the human body. Results are instantaneous and last six to eighteen months depending on the product and area treated. Sculptra Aesthetic is made from poly-L lactic acid and is an indirect filler that causes your own cells to naturally produce more of your own collegan.
When to Consider Fillers
- If you have deep lines around the eyes, brow or mouth
- If you would like to change the contours of your jaw, nose or lips
- If you are interested in a minimally invasive, non-surgical treatment option
- If you are ok with subtle results that are not permanent
- If you are not quite ready for surgical options like facelifts and fat transfers
How Can Dermal Fillers Enhance My Appearance?
While dermal fillers are casually known as “wrinkle fillers,” they can do much more than just smooth out wrinkles, although they are excellent at this too! Here are a few of the common issues dermal fillers can help address:
- Smooth out lines around nose and mouth. (a.k.a. marionette lines, smile lines, and parentheses)
- Enhance & restore volume to sunken cheeks.
- Diminish vertical lip lines
- Plump & enhance the lips
- Smooth out a chin crease
- Contour the nose
During your consultation, Dr. Maningas or Beth, our nurse injector, will evaluate your area of concern and review your medical history. While the risks associated with dermal fillers, you need to fully disclose your medical history prior to treatment, as certain allergies, skin and neurological conditions, or medications can jeopardize your safety or results. For instance, you need to tell your cosmetic surgeon if you have been taking NSAIDs (e.g., aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) or blood thinners, as these increase the likelihood of bruising.
Your Injectable Filler Treatment
Just before the actual treatment, the area will be cleaned, and you may be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection. Many filler products also contain lidocaine, a mild anesthetic, which is intended to help minimize discomfort during and after your treatment. Your provider will then inject a precise amount of filler strategically beneath the skin.
Depending on the product and the areas treated, you should be able to notice results immediately after receiving filler injections. Some patients experience mild bruising and swelling, but these are temporary and should subside over the days following treatment. You will be able to go back to your normal activities right after treatment, but your cosmetic surgeon may ask you to take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activity.
How Long Do the Results Last?
How long the effects of dermal filler treatments will last varies widely, depending on the product used, the area of treatment, and the patient. Generally speaking, the denser the product is and the more deeply it is injected, the longer it will last, although this is not a hard and fast rule. To maintain your results, your cosmetic surgeon will simply repeat treatment, adjusting the amount and techniques as necessary to ensure optimal results.
Hyaluronic acid fillers tend to be the most temporary option, and therefore are often recommended for first-time filler patients. These will typically last from 6 to 18 months, depending on treatment and product(s) used. For example, injections to the lips will wear out a little faster than those to the nasolabial folds. Certain HA fillers, such as VOLUMA, are formulated to last longer, but are usually limited to certain areas, such as the cheeks.
Synthetic fillers tend to be longer lasting, as they are not absorbed by the body. They can be a great option for the right patient, but you’ll want to be ready to commit to results that will be there for several years—and take care to choose an experienced, qualified provider whose aesthetic style you like.
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA™ XC
JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC injectable gel is the first and only filler FDA-approved to instantly add volume to the cheek area. It gives you a subtle lift, helping to restore contour and a more youthful profile, for up to two years, in patients over the age of 21. It’s different than JUVÉDERM XC and works on a different area of the face. JUVÉDERM XC smoothes out moderate to severe wrinkles and folds around the nose and mouth, like parentheses. JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC, however, adds volume to the cheek area.
JUVÉDERM ULTRA™ or ULTRA PLUS™
JUVÉDERM® is a gel of smooth consistency made of hyaluronic acid—a naturally occurring substance in your skin that gives skin volume and hydration. We use JUVÉDERM injectable gel by easing it under your skin to instantly restore your skin’s volume and smooth away facial wrinkles and folds, like your “smile lines” or “parentheses” —the creases that run from the bottom of your nose to the corners of your mouth. Results can last up to a year.
JUVÉDERM provides a smooth, natural look and feel—so everyone will notice, but no one will know! In fact, studies show superior results of JUVÉDERM compared to a collagen-based dermal filler. JUVÉDERM injectable gel is the first FDA-approved hyaluronic acid dermal filler that is proven to be safe and effective for persons of color.
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC
JUVÉDERM VOLLURE™ XC adds volume to smooth moderate to severe parentheses lines and wrinkles around the nose and mouth, to help give you the subtle, long-lasting results you want and lasting up to 18 months.
Sculptra Aesthetic® is a new type of facial injectable made from poly-L-lactic acid that helps correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles, and folds that appear with aging by gradually replacing lost collagen. The main ingredient is a biocompatible, biodegradable synthetic material that has been used by physicians for decades.
Not an overnight miracle, Sculptra Aesthetic takes a different approach to improving lines and wrinkles. Applied through a series of injections over a three-month period Sculptra works within the deep dermis, reinforcing your skin’s structure to replace lost collagen. This reinforced collagen structure provides a foundation that gradually restores the look of fullness of your shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds that has been depleted over time. The result? Sculptra Aesthetic is different because it gradually and subtly corrects these facial wrinkles. This can provide a refined, more youthful looking appearance that can last up to two years.
Restylane is a safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, the lines between the nose and the corners of the mouth. It also can be used to enhance lips for a more youthful look.
Restylane is a cosmetic dermal filler made of non-animal based hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that already exists in the human body and is used to provide volume and fullness to the skin. Results are instantaneous and last about six to nine months.
Restylane is free from animal proteins. This quality limits any risk of animal-based disease transmission or allergic reaction. Restylane also has the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid available in a dermal filler. Treatments are typically scheduled twice a year. Having a touch-up treatment before the product has fully dissipated may enhance the lasting effect.
RADIESSE® Volumizing Filler immediately provides the volume and lift needed to diminish the signs of aging because of the calcium-based microspheres and gel that comprise the product. What’s unique about RADIESSE Volumizing Filler is that it acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. This process continues for several months, which extends the initial effect of RADIESSE Volumizing Filler. Best of all, the natural results are clinically proven to last a year or more in many patients.
How Much Does It Cost?
The cost facial fillers at Maningas Cosmetic Surgery vary by product and how many syringes are used to achieve desired outcomes. Facial fillers can run from $677 to $810 per syringe. A treatment plan with pricing can be discussed during a complimentary consultation with Beth, or Dr. Maningas by request, to go over concerns and determine what products to what areas will deliver exceptional results. A lot of patients start with the area of concern that is most bothersome and then continue to work on other areas to complete their journey over time. Or some patients choose to do a “liquid facelift” and get several areas treated at once.
